Anno Primo is one of Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupoβs most iconic wines. Its name, βprimo annoβ (first year), pays homage to the first wine produced by the winery in 1974 and the first Ghemme to be bottled and marketed by the estate.
It is made from Nebbiolo grapes β a variety known locally as Spanna β grown in the estateβs vineyards on the hills of Ghemme, in Upper Piedmont. These hills are of morainic origin and feature soils particularly rich in minerals, formed over time from materials carried downstream from the Monte Rosa area.
This complex composition contributes to the wineβs bold, austere and mineral character. After being harvested by hand, the grapes are destemmed and gently crushed.Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, whilst subsequent ageing in large oak casks and bottle ageing allow the Nebbiolo to develop structure and complexity.
Alcohol content: 13.5% vol.
ββββββββ IN THE GLASS βββββββββ’ COLOUR: intense ruby red, with garnet hues that become more pronounced as the wine matures.β’ NOSE: the bouquet evokes violets, wilted red roses and small red berries, including raspberries. This is followed by a delicate balsamic and resinous note and warmer, toasty hints, reminiscent of cocoa and cinnamon.β’ PALATE: dry, warm and structured, with ripe tannins that are well integrated on the palate. Its lively freshness underpins its balance and accompanies a long, persistent finish.
ββββββββ PAIRINGS ββββββββ
The profile of Anno Primo pairs very well with first courses featuring rich sauces and meat ragù, as well as roasts, braised dishes, stews and other slow-cooked dishes. It is also recommended with red meats, game and mature or blue-veined cheeses. Its earthy, floral and balsamic notes also make it well-suited to dishes prepared with truffles.
ββββββββ SERVING ββββββββ
Serve at a temperature of between 18 and 20 °C.To allow the aromas to develop, it is advisable to uncork the bottle about 30 minutes before serving and allow the wine time to breathe.
